Newport-Mesa Unified School District has seven Board of Education members who are each elected to four-year terms. The terms are staggered by two years. Board elections are held during the general election in November of even numbered years. Currently, Board members are elected through an at-large voting system in which each Board member is required to reside in a Trustee Area.
Due to the extensive population growth on the east side of the district, the Board of Education is working toward balancing trustee areas to each have proportionate population. As part of the process, the Superintendent convened a committee to review the Trustee Areas.
This change will be for voting area purposes and would not impact the school boundary map. Student's home school would remain the same.
Board of Education Actions
At the February 28, 2017 Board of Education Meeting the Board voted to conduct public hearings to obtain public input regarding the readjustment of the trustee area boundaries. The Board also voted on a resolution to move to a voting by trustee area, beginning with the 2018 election. Please click here for the Board Agenda.
