Enrollment: Karen Kendall Welcome Center

The Karen Kendall Welcome Center will be closed from February 17 - 21, 2020 for the Presidents Recess. The Karen Kendall Center will resume normal business hours on February 24, 2020.

Pre-Enrollment for the 2020/21 school year will begin on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 for students entering Kindergarten thru Grade 12.

The Karen Kendall Welcome Center is designed to assist all parents/ students with the pre-enrollment process for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD). Our goal is to provide you with the most welcoming experience possible.

New Student Enrollment

Follow the steps listed below to complete your student's enrollment.

Address Verification is required for new students and any current students who have moved within the Newport-Mesa Unified School District boundaries.

The following documentation will be helpful for the verification process. At least one item from each section must be provided in person.

Section 1: Residency Affidavit (Provided by NMUSD)

Section 2: Verification of current residence must match the address being verified and one of the following documents must be provided: (PO Box addresses are NOT accepted.)

  • Property tax bill with parent/guardian name and property address. To obtain a copy of this document, contact your local Treasurer Tax Collector’s office at (714) 834-3411.
  • Rental/Lease agreement with parent/guardian name and address, including the property management’s/owner’s contact information. If rental/lease agreement is not current, please provide the agreement with the previous two months rental receipts with the property management’s/owner’s contact information.

Section 3: Verification of current residence must match address being verified and one of the following additional documents must be provided: (Disconnection  Utility Notices are not accepted)

  • Current  Utility Bill (Gas or Electric)
  • Current Phone Bill
  • Current Income Tax documents
  • Current Vehicle Registration
  • Current Medi-Cal Letter of Approval
  • Current Women, Infants, Children (WIC) Letter

If you are not the primary owner/renter? A Co-Residency Affidavit Form will be provided for you to state that your child and you live in someone else's household (for example: renting a room). In these cases, both the primary owner/renter and you will need to sign the Co-Residency Affidavit Form and the owner/renter must also be present with the appropriate address verification documents. 

If you are the student's caregiver, you must present a Caregiver's Affidavit form (Provided by NMUSD)

The pre-enrollment process is required for all new students or students returning after being out of the District for 12 consecutive months or more.

Part 1: complete The Online Pre-Enrollment process. This can be completed at home or at the computer lab (room 112) at the BESST Center after you have completed address verification and received an address verification number unique to your child. 

Before completing the pre-enrollment process online for your child, you will need the following information:

  • Parent/Guardian work address and phone number
  • A valid email address for Parent/Guardian with password
  • Emergency contacts information (relationship to student, name, address, phone numbers)
  • Physician’s name and contact information
  • Information on student’s health, issues, medications
  • Information of the previous school attended

Part 2: The Pre-Enrollment Packet: If you completed the online Pre-enrollment at home, you must still come back to the Karen Kendall Welcome Center to finalize the packet before heading to your school site.

The following documents are required for entry into any of the NMUSD schools. We cannot process your child’s pre-enrollment without the documents below:

  • Address Verification Golden Ticket & Manila envelope (provided above in the Step 1 section)
  • Proof of Age*
  • Student Physical Exam Form (Preschool, Transitional Kinder, Kindergarten, and 1st Grades) **
  • Tuberculosis Screening (Preschool, Transitional Kinder, Kindergarten, and 1st Grades) **
  • Immunization Card (Up to date for school entry)
  • Custody, Guardianship, Restraining Orders (if applicable)

* Proof of age can include a certified copy of a birth records or statement by the local registrar, or a county recorder certifying the date or birth, or a baptism certificate duly attested, or a passport, or when none of the foregoing is obtainable, an affidavit of the parent, guardian or custodian of the minor, or any other appropriate means of proving the age of the child.
** Physical exam to be completed prior to school entry less than 1 year for Preschool, less than 6 months for Transitional Kinder and Kindergarten, and less than 18 months for 1st grade.

Please note that the school will also ask for a current report card or transcript, as well as any 504 and IEP information pertaining to your student in order to help place them in school. Records request forms can also be obtained from either the enrollment website Schools Records Request Form the Welcome Center, or your local school.

Parent/Guardian must bring supporting documents (sealed packet in Step 2) to your school of attendance where enrollment is completed. 

Please remember that the enrollment process is not complete until your student's information packet and supporting documentation have been accepted by your local school. 

Tips for successful enrollment:

  • Have all documentation ready or you will be asked to return with all required documentation.
  • Our offices close at 3 pm, the average process time takes about 30 minutes (not including wait time) and depending on the number of children being enrolled.
  • Our busiest times are during lunchtime, please expect longer wait times and we thank you for your patience.
  • Please expect a delay in response to messages as we are attending to new students.
