School Closure - Distance Learning

Distance Learning to Continue Through 2019/2020 School Year

4/2/2020

On April 1, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced an expectation that distance learning continue through the end of the school year. Orange County Department of Education Superintendent Dr. Al Mijares also made a similar recommendation. This is part of the statewide effort to flatten the curve and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Our district will follow these recommendations and continue with Distance Learning through the 2019/2020 school year and schools will not physically re-open until further notice.

We remain committed to support our students' needs, providing Distance Learning, school counseling services, mental health and wellness supports, grab-and-go meals, Chromebooks and connectivity supports, as well as other services.

Among other things, we also are currently exploring:

  • Options to ensure that high school seniors are on track to graduate
  • Options for end of year activities, including graduations
  • An agreement that the Governor mentioned between the State of California and California universities to waive certain requirements for admissions.

Spring Recess & Student Meals:

As a reminder, next week (April 6-10) is Spring recess and no instruction will be occurring. However, student meals will continue. Beginning April 6, breakfast meals will be provided with each lunch. Learn more at the Student Meals webpage

Thank you:

Our teachers and staff have done an incredible job navigating this difficult situation and we appreciate everyone’s understanding and support as we continue to prepare our students for future success. We know this is a lot of work for our staff, students and parents, but please know that we are all in this together and we are here to support you.

As always, we will continue to diligently monitor the situation and keep you informed of any updates. You also may visit the School Closure- Distance Learning webpage for additional information and resources.

At its Board of Education meeting on March 31, 2020, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Education took action to extend Distance Learning through May 29. As of now, schools are expected to reopen on Monday, June 1, 2020. Please know that this date is subject to change, even through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

We will continue to diligently monitor the situation and keep you informed of any updates.

Distance Learning

Now that Distance learning is underway and entering week two, there will be a shift to greater levels of instructional interaction between teachers and students, and available resources. With the extension to May 29, teachers will plan new instruction for learning based on where students left off in the curriculum during in-class instruction. Teachers will have flexibility to determine the content of their instruction, based on grade level standards and student needs.

Please keep in mind that beyond the instruction provided by teachers, there are multiple learning opportunities available in the NMUSD Distance Learning Toolkit

There are many intricacies with Distance Learning that make a few areas a bit more challenging to support, but we will work through them and do all we can to provide the best instruction possible for all our students. Teachers will be in contact with parents and students regarding specifics of “classroom” instruction and expectations. We very much appreciate your ongoing patience and flexibility as our schools work toward making the most of Distance Learning.

Thank You

We know the huge change this has been for everyone and we continue to be grateful for our school community as we navigate this challenging time together. As things continue to evolve, we know it can be frustrating for all of us, however, we will continue to update you as more information becomes available.

We also cannot stress enough how important it is for families to remain at home except for essential activities, until further notice from our local health department and government officials.

Once again, thank you all.

3/30/2020

At the March 31 Board of Education Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Fred Navarro will recommend to the Board of Education that Distance Learning continue until May 8, with classes tentatively scheduled to return to the classroom on May 11.

Now that Distance learning is underway and entering week two, there will be a shift to greater levels of instructional interaction between teachers and students, and available resources. With the anticipated extension to May 8, teachers will plan new instruction for learning based on where students left off in the curriculum during in-class instruction. Teachers will have flexibility to determine the content of their instruction, based on grade level standards and student needs.

Please keep in mind that beyond the instruction provided by teachers, there are multiple learning opportunities available in the NMUSD Distance Learning Toolkit

Video Update to Newport-Mesa Community

Dear Newport-Mesa Community,

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to you for your ongoing understanding and flexibility during this unique and unprecedented time. We want to encourage our community to pause, slow down, and check-in with family, friends and loved ones, as the information regarding this situation has been changing by the hour. As you likely know, Governor Newsom issued a “stay-at-home” order on March 19 to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We continue on a path forward to provide Distance Learning for our students starting the week of March 23.

Please see below for documents with updates regarding our plan to begin Distance Learning for students next week and see below for other updates.

We are following up with you regarding the status of the closure of our schools, which will remain closed through April 3, with spring recess as scheduled April 6-10.

It is important for everyone to continue to follow the health guidelines, including the social distancing measures, to reduce the transmission of the virus and help reduce the burden on our health care system, which is why Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) made the decision to dismiss schools.

Please know that this is a fluid situation and the following information could change as we move forward. For now, we expect to launch Distance Learning the week of March 23. See below for responses to frequently asked questions.

We continue to monitor the situation and are working diligently as we navigate through this. We will update you once we know more. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Student Meals Information

Dear Newport-Mesa Community,

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Education took action today to prevent a COVID-19 spread into our schools and made the following difficult decisions. These decisions were made during a special emergency Board Meeting today, and in consultation with the Orange County Department of Education.

  • District Schools and Offices Closed: Monday, March 16, 2020  No students or staff report to school/work (with the exception of management and administrative staff, or at the direction of your supervisor)
  • School Dismissed: March 17 - April 3, 2020  Students do not report to school; All staff reports to work as usual
  • Anticipated Distance Learning: March 20 - April 3, 2020   All staff reports to work as usual; Students learn from home.  Spring break remains unaffected, April 6-10, 2020
  • As of now, all students are expected to return to school on April 13, 2020.

Staff will work on finalizing plans and training to move to distance learning. We ask parents/guardians to make the rest of the arrangements for their student(s) to stay home during this time.

  • Anticipated Distance Learning (March 20 - April 3, 2020)
We anticipate implementing a Distance Learning Plan (DLP) March 20 - April 3, 2020. Staff reports to work; students learn from home. While distance learning is new and different for many of us, it is essential in continuing students’ education at this time of great uncertainty.
Schools will share additional information regarding distance learning as soon as possible.

  • Meals (UPDATED 3/14/2020)

Free student lunches are available, for pick-up only, from 11 am to 12:30 pm., Monday through Friday. Lunches may be picked up at the front of the schools, as noted below. Lunch is limited to one per student.

    Monday, March 16:
Student lunches will be available at California, Kaiser, Killybrooke, Paularino, Pomona, Sonora, Whittier and Wilson Elementary Schools.

    Tuesday, March 17 - April 3:
Student lunches will be available at all schools.

Please know that we are mindful of the challenges for a number of our families, the disruption of routines, and the technological and logistical challenges of implementing a distance learning plan. However, the health and safety of our school community has been, and will continue to be our number one priority. This decision is made out of great respect for our schools community. Please give our schools and District time to plan accordingly and know that our schools will reach out to parents next week with additional information.
