Kindergarten Information

Senate Bill (SB) 1381 (Chapter 705, Statues of 2010) amended California Education Code (Section 46300, 48000, and 48010) to change the required birth date for admission to kindergarten beginning in the 2012–2013 school year. A child shall be admitted to kindergarten if his or her 5th birthday falls on or before September 1 for the 2016-17 school year.

Newport-Mesa Unified School District offers a Transitional Kindergarten program. Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.  A child is eligible to enroll for Transitional Kindergarten if his or her birthdate falls between:

  • September 2, 2011 to December 2, 2011 for the 2016-17 school year

The first step in the enrollment process is Address Verification. Documentation must be provided in person by the parent/guardian at the office of Community Support and Services, 2045 Meyer Place, Bldg. D, Costa Mesa.
