Superintendent Search

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) is conducting a superintendent search, with advisement from Leadership Associates, an executive search firm. Leadership Associates conducts numerous superintendent searches for boards of education throughout the State of California.  A contract with Leadership Associates was approved at the May 21, 2021 Special Meeting of the Board of Education.

The superintendent search process will include stakeholder input opportunities, robust recruitment and outreach efforts, intensive and confidential vetting of candidates, and presentation of candidates to the NMUSD Board of Education. The Board of Education, is solely responsible for hiring the new Superintendent. The Board will seek, receive, and consider all input from the community, review all applications, interview candidates, and select the new Superintendent.

Interim Superintendent 

The first step in the process is for the Board of Education to hire an interim superintendent, as the thorough search process for a permanent superintendent is underway.

Leadership Associates will present qualified candidates for the Interim Superintendent position for the NMUSD Board of Education to consider. It is anticipated that an Interim Superintendent will be selected by mid-summer 2021.

  • July 26, 2021 - Deadline for applications
  • Consultants complete comprehensive reference and background checks on applicants



  • August 12, 2021, 8:30 am (closed session) - Board confers with consultants, reviews applications, and selects candidates to be interviewed
  • Week of August 16, 2021 (closed session) -  Board interviews candidates, selects finalist(s)
August/ September 
  • Board completes the validation process of the leading candidate and makes final determination
  • September 14, 2021 - Board approved superintendent contract at a regularly scheduled board meeting
September/ October                                   New superintendent begins
